How VAT / GST works

Value Added Tax (VAT) and Goods and Services Tax (GST) are consumption taxes applied to goods and services. Businesses collect the tax on behalf of the government. In most countries, businesses can reclaim the VAT they pay on business expenses, so the tax ultimately falls on the end consumer.

Rates vary widely by country: EU countries typically charge 17-27%, the UK charges 20%, Australia charges 10%, and Canada charges 5% GST (plus provincial taxes). Some items like food, children's clothing, and books may be taxed at reduced rates or zero-rated.

Add vs remove VAT

"Add VAT" takes a net (pre-tax) price and calculates the gross (tax-inclusive) price. "Remove VAT" takes a gross price and extracts the VAT amount. Businesses use the remove mode when they need to calculate the net amount for accounting purposes.
